A Notice of Some Possible Added Trouble

Here is a notice I received on Saturday.
Click over notice to enlarge.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is apparently caving to mass opposition to building a 1,205-seat senior high school on the Upper Reservation of Fort MacArthur.

Do I believe they will only build a "810-seat" campus if they get approval to build South Region High School #15 (SRHS 15) where many of the community calls Angel's Gate?

NOPE!

I think this is a trick to get by the massive opposition, including opposition form Dr. Richard Vladovic and Councilwoman Janice Hahn, to building such a large campus so close to the ocean.

I also doubt that IF they get their 810-seat campus they won't, at some point down the road, say; Oops! We really needed that 1,205-seat school, so we have to add another 405 seats.

It also seems like LAUSD's argument that if all of the land isn't used a Charter School might come in and take land, may also be false.

How might the lowering of the size of the purposed campus affect the issues surrounding Ponte Vista.

In May, 2007 LAUSD changed their minds concerning South Region High School #14 (SRHS 14) and their attempts to build a 2,025-seat senior high school on 15.03 acres of Ponte Vista land.

LAUSD, before they finally decided to 'mothball' those plans, stated that they would build an "810-seat" campus at Ponte Vista to relieve over crowding at Narbonne H.S.

The Ponte Vista site is within the boundaries of Narbonne.

I have heard at least one individual suggest he would allow for greater than R1 density at Ponte Vista if LAUSD were given land at Ponte Vista for a new campus.

I don't like this idea, but it may be something supporters and others might want to use as a bargaining chip, but I hope not.

SRHS 14, when it was downsized from 2,025-seats to 810-seats, would have required between 6-8 acres, according to LAUSD.

I don't want Bob to have the option of suggesting he would donate 6-8 acres for a new campus. He might consider omitting the "public park" at Ponte Vista, in order to have space for a new school.

We don't need another school with its only student and parent access being Western Avenue.
It's bad enough that Mary Star has two access points but parents and students driving to that school must use Western.

Do we need another public, regular high school in San Pedro? Perhaps we do and perhaps we don't.

Might opponents of a new campus at Angel's Gate find more favor in demanding that a 810-seat campus be built at Ponte Vista or the Cooper/Science Center site along Taper Avenue, Barrywood and Sandwood?

These are not questions I want to find answers for at this time.

The many issues concerning Ponte Vista are coming back into play with the scheduled Public Hearing by the Planning Department.

I oppose any new school campus being built next to the Point Fermin Outdoor Education Center, but I sure do not wish to have to fight against having an 810-seat school being considered at Ponte Vista or northwest San Pedro.
